(ìàòåðèêîâîãî, ïëàâàþùåãî, ïîäçåìíîãî è ò.ä.), à òàêæå â âèäå ñíåãà, èíåÿ è ò.ä. Ïðèðîäíûé Ë. îáû÷íî çíà÷èòåëüíî ÷èùå, ÷åì âîäà, ò.ê. ðàñòâîðèìîñòü âåùåñòâ (êðîìå NH4F) âî Ë. êðàéíå ïëîõàÿ. Ë. ìîæåò ñîäåðæàòü ìåõàíè÷åñêèå ïðèìåñè — òâ¸ðäûå ÷àñòèöû, êàïåëüêè êîíöåíòðèðîâàííûõ ðàñòâîðîâ, ïóçûðüêè ãàçà. Íàëè÷èåì êðèñòàëëèêîâ ñîëè è êàïåëåê ðàññîëà îáúÿñíÿåòñÿ ñîëîíîâàòîñòü ìîðñêîãî ëüäà. Âñëåäñòâèå ìåíüøåé, ÷åì ó âîäû, ïëîòíîñòè Ë. îáðàçóåò íà ïîâåðõíîñòè âîäû ïëàâó÷èé ïîêðîâ, ïðåäîõðàíÿþùèé ðåêè è âîäî¸ìû îò ïðîìåðçàíèÿ äî äíà. Çàâèñèìîñòü ìåæäó óñòàíîâèâøåéñÿ ñêîðîñòüþ òå÷åíèÿ è íàïðÿæåíèåì ó ïîëèêðèñòàëëè÷åñêîãî Ë. ãèïåðáîëè÷åñêàÿ; ïðè ïðèáëèæ¸ííîì îïèñàíèè å¸ ñòåïåííûì óðàâíåíèåì ïîêàçàòåëü ñòåïåíè óâåëè÷èâàåòñÿ ïî ìåðå ðîñòà íàïðÿæåíèÿ; êðîìå òîãî, ñêîðîñòü òå÷åíèÿ ïðÿìî ïðîïîðöèîíàëüíà ýíåðãèè àêòèâàöèè è îáðàòíî ïðîïîðöèîíàëüíà àáñîëþòíîé òåìïåðàòóðå, òàê ÷òî ñ ïîíèæåíèåì òåìïåðàòóðû Ë. ïðèáëèæàåòñÿ ê àáñîëþòíî òâ¸ðäîìó òåëó.  ñðåäíåì ïðè áëèçêîé ê òàÿíèþ òåìïåðàòóðå òåêó÷åñòü Ë. â 106 ðàç âûøå, ÷åì ó ãîðíûõ ïîðîä. Áëàãîäàðÿ òåêó÷åñòè Ë. íå íàêîïëÿåòñÿ áåñïðåäåëüíî, à ñòåêàåò ñ òåõ ÷àñòåé çåìíîé ïîâåðõíîñòè, ãäå åãî âûïàäàåò áîëüøå, ÷åì ñòàèâàåò (ñì. Ëåäíèêè). Âñëåäñòâèå î÷åíü âûñîêîé îòðàæàòåëüíîé ñïîñîáíîñòè Ë. (0,45) è îñîáåííî ñíåãà (äî 0,95) ïîêðûòàÿ èìè ïëîùàäü — â ñðåäíåì çà ãîä îêîëî 72 ìëí. êì2 â âûñîêèõ è ñðåäíèõ øèðîòàõ îáîèõ ïîëóøàðèé — ïîëó÷àåò ñîëíå÷íîãî òåïëà íà 65% ìåíüøå íîðìû è ÿâëÿåòñÿ ìîùíûì èñòî÷íèêîì îõëàæäåíèÿ çåìíîé ïîâåðõíîñòè, ÷åì â çíà÷èòåëüíîé ìåðå îáóñëîâëåíà ñîâðåìåííàÿ øèðîòíàÿ êëèìàòè÷åñêàÿ çîíàëüíîñòü. Ëåòîì â ïîëÿðíûõ îáëàñòÿõ ñîëíå÷íàÿ ðàäèàöèÿ áîëüøå, ÷åì â ýêâàòîðèàëüíîì ïîÿñå, òåì íå ìåíåå òåìïåðàòóðà îñòà¸òñÿ íèçêîé, ò. ê. çíà÷èòåëüíàÿ ÷àñòü ïîãëîùàåìîãî òåïëà çàòðà÷èâàåòñÿ íà òàÿíèå Ë., èìåþùåãî î÷åíü âûñîêóþ òåïëîòó òàÿíèÿ.
         Ë. II, III è V äëèòåëüíîå âðåìÿ ñîõðàíÿþòñÿ ïðè àòìîñôåðíîì äàâëåíèè, åñëè òåìïåðàòóðà íå ïðåâûøàåò —170°Ñ. Ïðè íàãðåâàíèè ïðèáëèçèòåëüíî äî —150°Ñ îíè ïðåâðàùàþòñÿ â êóáè÷åñêèé Ë. (Ë. Ic), íå ïîêàçàííûé íà äèàãðàììå, ò. ê. íåèçâåñòíî, ÿâëÿåòñÿ ëè îí ñòàáèëüíîé ôàçîé. Äð. ñïîñîá ïîëó÷åíèÿ Ë. Ic — êîíäåíñàöèÿ âîäÿíûõ ïàðîâ íà îõëàæäåííóþ äî —120°Ñ ïîäëîæêó. Ïðè êîíäåíñàöèè ïàðîâ íà áîëåå õîëîäíîé ïîäëîæêå îáðàçóåòñÿ àìîðôíûé Ë. Îáå ýòè ôîðìû Ë. ìîãóò ñàìîïðîèçâîëüíî ïåðåõîäèòü â ãåêñàãîíàëüíûé Ë. I, ïðè÷¸ì òåì ñêîðåå, ÷åì âûøå òåìïåðàòóðà.
         Ë. IV ÿâëÿåòñÿ ìåòàñòàáèëüíîé ôàçîé â çîíå óñòîé÷èâîñòè Ë. V. Ë. IV ëåã÷å îáðàçóåòñÿ, à âîçìîæíî è ñòàáèëåí, åñëè äàâëåíèþ ïîäâåðãàåòñÿ òÿæ¸ëàÿ âîäà. Êðèâàÿ ïëàâëåíèÿ ëüäà VII èññëåäîâàíà äî äàâëåíèÿ 20 Ãí/ì2 (200 òûñ. êãñ/ñì2). Ïðè ýòîì äàâëåíèè Ë. VII ïëàâèòñÿ ïðè òåìïåðàòóðå 400°Ñ. Ë. VIII ÿâëÿåòñÿ íèçêîòåìïåðàòóðíîé óïîðÿäî÷åííîé ôîðìîé Ë. VII. Ë. IX — ìåòàñòàáèëüíàÿ ôàçà, âîçíèêàþùàÿ ïðè ïåðåîõëàæäåíèè Ë. III è ïî ñóùåñòâó ïðåäñòàâëÿþùàÿ ñîáîé íèçêîòåìïåðàòóðíóþ åãî ôîðìó. Âîîáùå ÿâëåíèÿ ïåðåîõëàæäåíèÿ è ìåòàñòàáèëüíûå ðàâíîâåñèÿ î÷åíü õàðàêòåðíû äëÿ ôàç, îáðàçóåìûõ âîäîé. Íåêîòîðûå èç ëèíèé ìåòàñòàáèëüíûõ ðàâíîâåñèé îáîçíà÷åíû íà äèàãðàììå ïóíêòèðîì.
         Ïîëèìîðôèçì Ë. áûë îáíàðóæåí Ã. Òàììàíîì (1900) è ïîäðîáíî èçó÷åí Ï. Áðèäæìåíîì (íà÷èíàÿ ñ 1912). Ñ 60-õ ãã. ôàçîâàÿ äèàãðàììà âîäû, ïîëó÷åííàÿ Áðèäæìåíîì, íåñêîëüêî ðàç äîïîëíÿëàñü è óòî÷íÿëàñü.  òàáë. 3 è 4 ïðèâåäåíû íåêîòîðûå äàííûå î ñòðóêòóðàõ ìîäèôèêàöèé Ë. è íåêîòîðûå èõ ñâîéñòâà.
         Êðèñòàëëû âñåõ ìîäèôèêàöèé Ë. ïîñòðîåíû èç ìîëåêóë âîäû H2O, ñîåäèí¸ííûõ âîäîðîäíûìè ñâÿçÿìè â òð¸õìåðíûé êàðêàñ (ðèñ. 2). Êàæäàÿ ìîëåêóëà ó÷àñòâóåò â 4 òàêèõ ñâÿçÿõ, íàïðàâëåííûõ ê âåðøèíàì òåòðàýäðà.  ñòðóêòóðàõ Ë. I, Ic, VII è VIII ýòîò òåòðàýäð ïðàâèëüíûé, ò. å. óãîë ìåæäó ñâÿçÿìè ñîñòàâëÿåò 109°28'. Áîëüøàÿ ïëîòíîñòü Ë. VII è VIII îáúÿñíÿåòñÿ òåì, ÷òî èõ ñòðóêòóðû ñîäåðæàò ïî 2 òð¸õìåðíûå ñåòêè âîäîðîäíûõ ñâÿçåé (êàæäàÿ èç êîòîðûõ èäåíòè÷íà ñòðóêòóðå Ë. Ic), âñòàâëåííûå îäíà â äðóãóþ.  ñòðóêòóðàõ Ë. II, III, V è VI òåòðàýäðû çàìåòíî èñêàæåíû.  ñòðóêòóðàõ Ë. VI, VII è VIII ìîæíî âûäåëèòü 2 âçàèìîïåðåêðåùèâàþùèåñÿ ñèñòåìû âîäîðîäíûõ ñâÿçåé. Äàííûå î ïîëîæåíèÿõ ïðîòîíîâ â ñòðóêòóðàõ Ë. ìåíåå îïðåäåëåííû, ÷åì àòîìîâ êèñëîðîäà. Ìîæíî óòâåðæäàòü, ÷òî êîíôèãóðàöèÿ ìîëåêóëû âîäû, õàðàêòåðíàÿ äëÿ ïàðà, ñîõðàíÿåòñÿ è â òâ¸ðäîì ñîñòîÿíèè (ïî-âèäèìîìó, íåñêîëüêî óäëèíÿþòñÿ ðàññòîÿíèÿ Î — Í âñëåäñòâèå îáðàçîâàíèÿ âîäîðîäíûõ ñâÿçåé), à ïðîòîíû òÿãîòåþò ê ëèíèÿì, ñîåäèíÿþùèì öåíòðû àòîìîâ êèñëîðîäà. Ò. î. âîçìîæíû 6 áîëåå èëè ìåíåå ýêâèâàëåíòíûõ îðèåíòàöèé ìîëåêóë âîäû îòíîñèòåëüíî èõ ñîñåäåé. ×àñòü èç íèõ èñêëþ÷àåòñÿ, ïîñêîëüêó íàõîæäåíèå îäíîâðåìåííî 2 ïðîòîíîâ íà îäíîé âîäîðîäíîé ñâÿçè ìàëîâåðîÿòíî, íî îñòà¸òñÿ äîñòàòî÷íàÿ íåîïðåäåë¸ííîñòü â îðèåíòàöèè ìîëåêóë âîäû. Îíà îñóùåñòâëÿåòñÿ â áîëüøèíñòâå ìîäèôèêàöèé Ë. — I, III, V, VI è VII (è ïî-âèäèìîìó â Ic), òàê ÷òî, ïî âûðàæåíèþ Äæ. Áåðíàëà, Ë. êðèñòàëëè÷åí â îòíîøåíèè àòîìîâ êèñëîðîäà è ñòåêëîîáðàçåí â îòíîøåíèè àòîìîâ âîäîðîäà. Âî Ë. II, VIII è IX ìîëåêóëû âîäû îðèåíòàöèîííî óïîðÿäî÷åíû.

Äëÿ íåêîòîðûõ âèäîâ ñïîðòà èñïîëüçóþòñÿ êàòêè ñ èñêóññòâåííûì îõëàæäåíèåì, ïîçâîëÿþùèå ïðîâîäèòü ñîðåâíîâàíèÿ íà Ë. â ò¸ïëîå âðåìÿ ãîäà è â çàêðûòîì ïîìåùåíèè. Ïðèðîäíûé Ë. èñïîëüçóåòñÿ äëÿ õðàíåíèÿ è îõëàæäåíèÿ ïèùåâûõ ïðîäóêòîâ, áèîëîãè÷åñêèõ è ìåäèöèíñêèõ ïðåïàðàòîâ, äëÿ ÷åãî îí ñïåöèàëüíî ïðîèçâîäèòñÿ è çàãîòàâëèâàåòñÿ (ñì.
